brazing with induction of copper tubing

Induction brazing is one of the most efficient processes to braze copper tubing and fittings. With this technology, the brazing time and power can be set to whatever is needed to braze the copper tubing and fittings. With induction brazing the heat cycle can be set for each joint, making the process more productive. This technology is also very efficient because it uses less energy and time than stamping or brazing copper tubing and fittings with a torch.

There are no emissions when induction brazing copper tubing and fittings. This is because the copper tubing and fittings are heated with electromagnetic energy. There is no combustion or fuel needed. This process is also environmentally friendly and there is no waste.

Objective: A manufacturer of HVAC compressors wants to replace their current technology with induction heating to achieve higher energy efficiency. The customer is currently using a torch to braze copper tubing and fittings. Refrigerator compressor tubing is of different sizes – 1/8 inch (3.18 mm), 1/4 inch (6.35 mm), 5/16 inch (7.94 mm), 3/8 inch (9.53 mm). The main goal of this application test is to improve the quality and reliability of the process. The brazing temperature must be under 1400C, and the heat cycle must be between 7-10 seconds per joint.

Equipment: UBraze Handheld Brazing System with UltraHeat SM – 5kW Induction Heater.

Process: With induction heating, the temperature during the whole brazing process was set up to 815C and the heat time of the different sizes of joints was between 1-7 seconds per unit. Based on the results 5kW induction heating system will work for the customer’s needs with a standard brazing coil suitable for 3/8” OD tubing.

Benefits: The conclusions of this application test are faster brazing process, energy efficiency, and optimize productivity time.
