Induction Preheating of Iron Casting Parts

Objective: A manufacturer of rubber molded parts is looking into induction heating. The molds are iron casting, and each of them is about 30-50 pounds (13.6-22.7 kg). The parts need to be heated evenly to 180°C (356°F).

One of the main goals of this preheating application is to demonstrate the advantages of implementing induction heating in the manufacturing process. With energy-efficient induction heating, the customer can replace the old furnace technology they are currently using and save on energy costs. They will also improve the quality and reliability of its products.

With induction heating – faster heating cycles can be achieved compared to oven heating. Currently, heating in the oven takes more than 30 minutes.

Industry: Manufacturing & Automation

Equipment: This induction preheating test was made with UltraFlex power supply – UltraHeat SM – 5kW Induction Heater. We recommend using a more powerful machine like our new unit SOLO 32W – 25/32kW power supply for production.

Process: The desired heat cycle time of preheating the iron casting parts is between 1 – 2 minutes. To achieve those requirements, we made two application tests using different inductors. For both tests setup of the induction heating power supply was on 5kW of power and ~200°C temperature. To show that we reached temperature, we used tempilaq paint for 200°C.

A specially designed custom coil will be used in the production environment.

Benefits: Using an induction heating system will increase productivity rate and can achieve excellent quality, repeatability, temperature uniformity, and improve energy efficiency.
