Preheat steel rim for welding

Objective
Preheat a steel rim for tire removal using induction with an air-cooled coil in under 5 minutes. The preheating should reach 232°C (450°F) to break the adhesive bond to facilitate tire removal.

Test 1

Materials
• Steel Rim, 42cm OD, 21cm height (16.5” OD, 8.25” height)

Key Parameters
Power: 13 KW
Temperature: 232°C (450°F)
Time: 10 min.

Test 2

Materials
• Steel rim, 27cm OD, 25cm ID, 14cm height (10.5” OD, 10” ID, 5.5” height)
•  White rubber tire, 7.6cm (3″) thick

Key Parameters
Power: 5.5 KW
Temperature: 232°C (450°F)
Time: 6 min.

Test 3

Materials
• Steel rim, 21.5cm OD, 20cm ID, 14cm height (8.5” OD, 8” ID, 5.5” height)
• Red rubber tire, 8.9cm (3.5″) thick

Key Parameters
Power: 4.5 KW
Temperature: 232°C (450°F)
Time: 4 mins 30 sec.

Test 4

Materials
• Steel rim, 21.5cm OD, 30cm ID, 14cm height (8.5” OD, 8” ID, 5.5” height)
• Red rubber tire,  14cm (5.5”) thick

Key Parameters
Power: 7 KW
Temperature: 232°C (450°F )
Time: 2 mins 40 sec.

Results and Conclusions:

The target temperatures were successfully achieved for each part with the air-cooled unit. Faster times can be reached by tuning the equipment to each part. The number of coil turns varied for each part.
