What is Induction Nanoparticle Research?

Nanoparticles are particles between 1 and 100 nanometers in size. Nanoparticle research is currently an area of intense scientific interest due to a wide variety of potential applications in biomedical, optical and electronic fields.

One particular field of Nanoparticle research is Magnetic Hyperthermia, an experimental cancer treatment and potential treatment for other ailments, such as bacterial infection. When magnetic nanoparticles are introduced to an alternating magnetic field, they can produce heat. Likewise, if magnetic nanoparticles are introduced into a tumor, and the entire patient is placed into the alternating magnetic field, the heat can be focused to destroy the tumor cells.

The size and shape of nanoparticles influence their heating. In literature, frequencies of 10 kHz to 1 MHz have been used, with most applications below 500 kHz, The exact field strength needed to excite the nanoparticles but not excite losses in normal tissues is the subject of much research.

Ultraflex Power Technologies has two systems that we are now offering for nanoparticle research.  The original system, the UPT-n5 has 5 kW of power and operates with frequencies from 50 to 450 kHz.  The UPT-n5 is our standard solution for researchers.  However, we’ve also developed the UPT-n2, a lower power 2 kW system with frequencies from 50 – 300 kHz.

For the n2 System, one of our standard nanoparticle research coils (shown below) is included in the system. Researchers can select any of the standard coils, or if they prefer, provide details about their setup and we will design a coil for their specific requirements.  For the n5 system, all three of the standard coils are included.
