Pre heat steel fertilizer shank

Objective
Pre-heat a steel fertilizer shank to 600°F in 2 minutes or less with induction.

Equipment

Materials
• 4150 steel fertilizer shank
• The end of the shank is 1-1/4″ and tapers to a point at the end.

Power: 4.3 kW
Temperature: 300 °F (148°C)
Frequency: 155 kHz
Time: under 2 min

Process:

  1. 600°F Tempilaq used for temperature monitoring.
  2. Position the shank in the coil so that the coil covers the area to be heated but does not come in contact with the part.

Results/Benefits:
Heating of the steel fertilizer shank to over 600°F was successful in less than 2 minutes. The Tempilaq shows that the rod section of the shank started to reach 600°F at 36 seconds, the blade/point attachment reached 600°F along the entire weld section at 94 seconds. Heat times can be improved with improved coil design and more accurate fine tuning of the equipment when paired with an HS-4W heat station.
