Melting and Casting Ceramic

Objective
Successfully melt and cast a ceramic compound.

Equipment
EasyMelt 2G
W15/150, HS-8

Materials
• 170 g ceramic compound supplied by the customer
• Crucible for EasyMelt 2G
• 520 g compound supplied by the customer
• Crucible for UltraMelt 4G

Key Parameters Test – I
Equipment: EasyMelt 2G
Power: 2.8 kW
Temperature: Approximately 2552° F (1400° C)
Time: 40 min

Key Parameters Test – II
Equipment: W15/150, HS-8
Power: 12.5 kW
Temperature: Approximately 2552° F (1400° C)
Time: 10 min

Process:

  • Test 1
  1. The test with EasyMelt 2G was performed in an open air area to avoid buildup of harmful gasses.
  2. After 40 mins of melting, partial melting of the compound was achieved.
  3. The partially melted compound was cast into a graphite crucible.
  • Test 2
  1. The test was performed in a laboratory environment with forced ventilation.
  2. Two melting attempts were performed.
  3. The material was cast into a graphite crucible.

Results/Benefits:

  • Test 1
  1. For melting of such a compound, more power is needed.
  2. The 15kW system seems suitable for such an application.
  • Test 2
  1. First attempt: It was observed that the compound was not entirely melted.
  2. Second attempt: The material was heated an additional 5 mins to achieve complete melting.

Conclusions:

  1. Melting of this compound is achievable with the Ultraflex 15kW system.
